The Historic Britannia Kanmantoo began its story during a remarkable period in South Australian history, when Kanmantoo was a thriving mining town shaped by the arrival of the Cornish mining community. Among those who helped establish this initial chapter was William Cornelius, who built the Britannia Hotel as part of the growing township. Families came to Kanmantoo seeking the opportunity of a new life.
Britannia became a place of gathering, connection and hospitality. Built with the strength and craftsmanship of its time, the building’s original stonework and enduring character remain a reminder of the determination, skill and traditions of the Cornish settlers who helped shape Kanmantoo. A treasured link to this heritage remains through the original Cornish guardian statue, a symbol of protection and a nod to the building’s proud beginnings.
Over the years, Britannia has continued to evolve with the community around it. After its early days as a hotel, the building became a Bootmaker’s shop before transforming into Daly’s General Store, a much-loved local meeting place.
It later became a cherished family home, filled with the joys of family life, children growing up and generations creating memories within its walls. Among those connected to the property was the respected local figure Mrs Atkinson, whose legacy remains through the naming of nearby Atkinson Road.
The building entered another chapter as Osteria Sanso, a popular Italian restaurant that brought guests together once again through food, hospitality and shared experiences.
When entrepreneur Donna Twycross purchased the property, she saw the opportunity to honour its remarkable past. Through careful restoration and a passion for preserving its heritage, Britannia was returned to its historical roots and reborn as The Historic Britannia Kanmantoo.
Today, Britannia stands as a destination where history, hospitality and celebration meet. Every restored room, original feature and treasured detail tells a story — from the miners who built the community, to the families who called it home, and now the couples who begin their newly-wed journey here.
